Today, we’re here to talk about leg edema: what it looks and feels like, what causes it, and how you can find treatments that deliver measurable improvements.

Why are my legs so swollen and heavy?

Edema is the medical term for swelling, which can occur in many areas of the body. Leg edema is simply swelling in the legs, which also extends down into the ankles and feet.

Leg edema can happen after an injury or illness, but it can also develop seemingly without a clear reason. Here are some of the conditions that can cause or exacerbate leg edema:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Leg injury
  • Side effects from medication
  • Pregnancy
  • Eating a diet high in sodium
  • Spending too much time sitting or standing
  • Organ failure, including the kidneys, liver, and heart
  • Alcohol overuse
  • Thyroid disease
  • Deep vein thrombosis

As you can see, there are numerous potential causes for leg edema. That’s why it’s so important to work with a trained medical professional to determine a diagnosis.

What are some signs that I have leg edema?

The most obvious sign is visible swelling in your legs. Your skin might look puffy or abnormally tight, and the circumference of your legs is noticeably larger.

Additional signs and symptoms of leg edema include:

  • Feeling as though your clothing doesn’t fit properly
  • Sensation of heaviness in your legs
  • Inability to perform physical tasks that you once did with ease
  • Soreness, discomfort, or pain in your legs, ankles, and feet
  • Skin that is shiny, warmer than other areas of your body, or reddened
  • Inability to bend your knees, rotate your ankles, or flex your feet normally

If you experience these changes and they don’t resolve after a day or two of rest and elevation, it’s important to schedule a diagnostic exam. Some causes of leg edema are serious health conditions in their own right and require prompt treatment.

Treatments that can help with leg edema

The first step in treating your edema is to better understand what’s causing it. Dr. Begum reviews your personal and family health history, discusses your current symptoms and health, and examines your legs and feet to determine which diagnostic tools are best suited for your condition.

There are blood tests that can reveal insight into how your organs are currently functioning. Imaging gives a glimpse into your internal tissues, such as your blood vessels. There are even tests that can assess how well your circulatory system is moving blood throughout your body.

The results of these efforts let Dr. Begum know which treatment options are right for you. We offer a range of treatments for various vascular diseases. You might also need to adjust your medications to prevent future swelling.

In most cases, making lifestyle modifications is a great way to minimize edema and prevent future swelling. Dr. Begum will discuss how you can adjust your diet, get more exercise, and avoid some of the triggers for edema, such as high salt intake.

You’ll also learn techniques to ease leg edema at home. These include, but are not limited to, elevating your legs, using ice to minimize swelling and discomfort, and working compression socks or stockings into your routine.
